If you read my recent review of the Cargo Cosmetics Essentials Eyeshadow Palette (here), then you know how much I adore that palette! The incredible formula and quality left me highly impressed, so I was expecting a lot when it came time to try out the brand’s 01 Eye Contour Eyeshadow Palette ($28.00).
This palette comes in a sleek silver compact with a full-sized mirror and contains eight eyeshadows that are sectioned off into three columns with the first being cool tones, the second is of warm tones, and the last consisting of two base shades.
The six matte eyeshadows in the first two columns have some shimmers in them, but they’re undetectable once the colors are applied onto the eyes. Although these colors swatched nicely on my arm, they weren’t as effortless to work with as the eyeshadows from the Essentials Palette. The shades in this eye contour palette required more effort to get a strong color payoff and needed quite a bit of layering; I also had some issues with blending out the colors — it took patience to get a smooth finish. I think these eyeshadows might work better directly over an eyeshadow primer and not on top of a base color like how I had applied the colors.
The two base shades were the easiest to apply and blend; they went on nicely and smoothly.
I really like how wearable these colors are and think the cool and warm combinations are nicely grouped together to create a variety of looks. While these eyeshadows needed more effort to get the payoff that I wanted, they were still workable and were pretty long wearing when used with an eyeshadow primer. They also have very little fall-outs with no creasing or fading, which is lovely. Overall, I don’t think these eyeshadows are super bad since I’ve dealt with matte eyeshadows that were way worst than these. You can definitely achieve a nice result with these eyeshadows if you’re willing to spend the time to layer and build up the colors for intensity, of if you want a soft, natural effect, just dust the colors on gently for a subtle look.
This palette contains the shades:
- Cool Light – rosy mauve
- Cool Medium – grayish purple
- Cool Dark – plummy purple
- Warm Light – lightened peach
- Warm Medium – mid-tone brown
- Warm Dark – cocoa brown
- Matte Base – ivory

As always, swatches were done without using a primer.
Here are some of the colors in action — I used a mixture of both cool and warm tones to create this simple halo eye makeup look.
I used the colors:
- Matte Base – All-Over Base Color
- Warm Light – Crease
- Cool Dark – Inner and Outer Corners / Lower Lash Line
- Warm Dark – Blending Out Lid / Lower Lash Line
- Shimmer Base – Brow Bone / Inner Corner
