Back in September, I spoke to you about an awesome lipstick color matching system by TON Cosmetics that helps you find your perfect nude lip shade and reviewed their entire range of nude lipsticks here. I’m back today with their brand new red lipstick collection!
By answering a quick and easy questionnaire that takes less than two minutes, I was given recommendations on which lip colors were best suited for my skin tone and I thought this concept was genius! I instantly became a fan of this brand’s ingenuity, elegant packaging, and ultra lush formula. I’m excited that they’ve kept that same formula that initially made me fall in love with their lipsticks and expanded with nine new colors.
These lipsticks ($15.50 each) are housed in the same white and silver packaging as their initial nude shades with a pretty crystal detailing on the top of the cap for a glamorous touch. The red shades are broken up into three categories by complexion (fair, medium, dark) and once more by undertones (neutral, warm, cool).
All of these lipsticks have a creamy matte formula with no shimmers and a luscious sheen. They feel incredibly soft and lightweight, are richly pigmented, and ultra hydrating. The formulation was certainly consistent throughout the nine shades with every color delivering a lush full coverage upon application and were very comfortable to wear. I’ve worn only one shade for the entire day and it lasted just three hours on me before gradually fading, so I’m assuming the remaining colors probably have the same longevity as well. Although the wear time is short, the intense color payoff and highly enjoyable, moisturizing finish surely makes up for it.
I love the suppleness and weightlessness of these lipsticks and as individuals, they’re absolutely wonderful, but as a whole collection, it was lackluster for me. I wish there were prominent differences between the shades as the undertones were all too similar to see a noticeable variation among one another. The fair and medium reds were almost identical, and as I was doing swatches, it felt so redundant and I was quite disappointed in the lack of diversity (take a look at my swatches below). The dark group of colors had a more notable difference with each color having a dissimilar undertone, which was nice and something that the other two groups lacked. These reds have either a pink undertone or a tinge of orange with only Dark Cool 2 having a berry tint to it that made it the standout shade from all of the other red shades. I’m yearning for a rich brick red and more brown undertones.
I really enjoyed the variety in their nude collection and had high hopes for this red collection, and while, the formula remains wonderful, the similarities with many of the red shades was unsatisfying for me. On the other hand, I’m sure people won’t be purchasing every single shade in this collection, so that wouldn’t be a huge problem, but I would have loved a more diverse assortment. Also, I noticed that on the company’s website, there weren’t any swatches or demos of the colors — it would be nice if they provided photos of their lipsticks on people with various skin tones to truly see how the shades look on a specific complexion and undertone; i.e. a model with a fair complexion and a warm undertone, and etc. (something to consider for future launches?).
I have a fair complexion with a yellow undertone and have always had great luck with red lipsticks. I swatched all nine of these shades and loved how they all complemented my skin tone, which made me curious as to how these colors would look on someone who has a darker complexion than me. These are very beautiful colors, but as you’ll soon see, majority of the shades looked so similar.
